Tonight, the Pens received a piece of mail, express delivered to their locker room. It was read by Michel Therrien. We've exclusively obtained the letter:
I think it's almost a good thing the Pens took one on the chin tonight, because they didn't play their best game. They seemed to be a step slow, especially in the third when they were out shot 14-6.
One player who was at his best still was Ty Conklin. This could easily have been a loss in regulation if not for several amazing saves made by Ty. He stopped everyone but Mark Recchi in the shootout. You can't be upset with a goalie for stopping all three of the regulation shooters. One of the Pens needs to score in that circumstance.
The Thrashers were only credited with 9 hits, but it sure seemed like more than that. They were finishing off their checks the entire game, and made the Pens pay for taking penalties with two power play goals.
After tonight, the Pens will need to regroup a bit. They did lose, but they also earned a point to have a 2-0-1 southern road trip. That's not bad.
Next up: A chance to win a game in the Atlantic against the Rangers on Monday.
