The Referees - Part 3 - PIM Home vs Road

Now that we've taken a look at the refs that are associated with the most and least PIM, let's take a look at any differences that might exist between calls at home and on the road.

In 2006-2007, the average NHL numbers broke down like this:
Home Team Average PIM - 14.28
Road Team Average PIM - 13.38
Difference - .9

So the home teams averaged about a minute more in penalties than the road teams did over the course of the season.

The next three posts will take a look at three things:
  1. Rankings of PIM against the home team
  2. Rankings of PIM against the road team
  3. Rankings of the difference
The most interesting of these to me is that some refs are associated with games where the spread between home and road PIM is rather pronounced (over 2 minutes difference). I'm planning to look at the records of the home / road team in those games to see if it seems to make a difference in the outcome.

The series will resume on Monday with the first of the three posts.

Here are the previous parts in the series:
Introduction
Part 1 - High PIM
Part 2 - Low PIM
